How to install Glad packing braided (including ptfe, graphite, & gfo.)

Steps On How to Install the Packing Material

  • Open the shaft stuffing box supplied by Corseal.
  • Remove the old packing completely.
  • Check to make sure the new packing is the correct diameter size. (Stuffing box gland inside diameter minus shaft diameter divided by 2 should be the size of the packing material being used)
  • Check the condition of the shaft. Any burrs or sharp areas must be repaired prior to installation.
  • Make one wrap of  fibre packing around the drive shaft, wherever it is easily accessible, and cut the single ring to a length where the two ends meet each other(or you can use a mandrel the same diameter size as your shaft to size the ring).
  • Install the fibre packing in the stuffing box with up to 3 rings, one ring at a time making sure that you stagger the ring joints approximately 90°. It is essential that the ends of the rings meet cleanly at the joint. (Do not add grease or other lubricants – these can hinder performance.)
  • Tighten the packing gland until it is snug. Do not over tighten.
  • After about one or two hours of running time, check the prop shaft stuffing box for leakage, and make a final adjustment to attain minimum leakage. (There should be virtually no leakage.)

M & Y values your questions answered

"What are M & Y Values?" We are frequently asked at Corseal to provide M & Y values for our gaskets so that the customer can design flange joints using the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Occasionally, our sales & technical team are asked to explain how these values are used and how they are determined for our gaskets.  In simple terms, a flange must be designed to create sufficient compression load (usually expressed in stress, as psi) on the gasket contact area to create an initial seal. The gasket must conform to the flange surface (serrations when present) and must be compressed enough to seal off any internal voids or spaces. This stress is basically the "Y" value. The "M" value allows the flange designer to determine the compression load on the gasket required to maintain a seal when the vessel is pressurized. The flange must have sufficient strength and bolting to hold the joint together against the hydro-static end force, and to apply some additional "net stress" on the gasket. The "M" value is used as a multiplier or maintenance factor. The design will be such that the flange and bolting will hold the flanges together under pressure (the hydro-static end force) and exert an additional stress on the gasket of "M" multiplied by the internal pressure. The designer calculates the load required to seat the gasket (related to "Y") and performs a second calculation using the "M" value and the design internal pressure. The flanges are then built based on the larger of the two calculated values.

Did you know? This Packing is normally supplied loomstate. In the manufacture of ceramic yarn a certain small percentage of organic binder is used to aid spinning. This can sometimes cause “flashing” at high temperatures. This can be avoided if the product is heat cleaned prior to use or if the organic impurities in the product can be allowed to burn off in situ on application for the initial period.
